In the Spring of 2015, we noticed a pregnant stray kitty that was living in downtown Winter Haven. We feed the stray cats and try to catch them to get them fixed and to get their shots, but ‘Valentine’ found a male friend before we were able to catch her.
After a few weeks of coaxing (and lots of cat treats) we were able to get her comfortable with coming into the office. She would spend her days laying around the office, coming and going as she pleased.
She had her kittens one night when she was sleeping outside. She kept them hidden under a building next door; we didn’t see her for a few weeks. Then, one day she took them for a trip outside and we scooped them up and brought them into the office.
The first thing we had to do was wash them! They were living in the dirt under an old building.
We had lots of fun watching them grow, and play, and sleep. Many of our neighbors downtown would stop by to get a little ‘kitten time’.
For the next 4 weeks she raised them in our office. Eventually we got three of them adopted and kept two of them as office kitties.
The two we adopted are named Hermione, the black one and Luke, the Siamese. (both sci-fi references, of course)
We joke that they are very pampered kitties. They have their own drinking fountain and an automatic kitty liter box.
It fun for us to share our work space with these two; they provide a lot of joy and levity during the day.
If you ever visit sunny Florida, please stop by our office to meet Luke and Hermione!
